Coursework Planning: Statement of Intent

I plan to produce a clip of a science fiction drama called 'Machina' intended for a family audience. The extract of my clip will be extracted fro the beginning of the second episode.

This program follows the life of a high school student called Alex. This will serve as the equilibrium. She stumbles upon a technologically advanced pill called a Bionic Link Unit Emulation (BLUE) on the internet in the pursuit to abolish her flaws and make herself perfect - the pill itself promising to abide by these wishes. This serves as the disequilibrium when she takes the pill and administers an activation elixir that turns out to have some obscure side effects.

I will be using a range of shots to communicate the multiple perspectives that I intend to portray: the point of view/perspective shots will show Alex's new capabilities and communicate the supernatural and scientific links of the events, this will help to immerse the audience in the program. Close up and extreme close up shots will be used to show detail and specific significant action performed by the characters which may foreshadow an incident or event later on.

The main enigma will be where the pill came from, whether taking it was even safe and what the consequences of buying from such a suspicious website will be. One of the main characters is an adolescent female who  will reinforce the stereotypes of being a teenager (moody, sarcastic, etc) but will subvert the stereotype of men always being the hero and women being the heroine. In this instance Alex will be the hero saving the 'damsel in distress'. On the other hand, By having Alex take the pill in the first place I may also be inadvertently reinforcing the stereotype that young people are naive and easily manipulated. On the contrary,Alex subverts this stereotype as her personality and demeanour are very mature and controlled throughout the series.

I will establish the character type for BLUE using non-diagetic ominous music whenever they say or do something suspicious, therefore conveying a villain or anti-hero character type. This will also reinforce the stereotype that technology is evil.

The target audience is a family. There will be occasions of nostalgia for elder generations which would appeal to the parents. The overall sci-fi aspect and having 'superpowers' to a younger audience and will satisfy the science fiction psychographic. With the main cast being teenagers, this will gratify consumers looking for personal identity in characters or diversion and escapism in a science fiction drama. The drama and science fiction aspects will provide diversion and escapism to an audience as well as they will get to experience someone else's life.

The genre will be transmitted through the consistent colour scheme of blues, greys and white to connote science fiction. This will also be conveyed through the non-diagetic sound which will be ominous and electronic/tencho background music as these are also conventions of science fiction. The diagetic sound present will be from a conversation between two characters, Alex and her mother before a car crash. The car accident is also a typical feature of drama which will facilitate the communication of the genre.
