General

1) Based on your research, what type of people read Reveal? Consider demographics and psychographics.

The demographic for Reveal would mainly be white, adult females. Mostly women in parenthood or pregnancy as tips for mothers are also featured on the cover. The psychographic would be the aspirer or the struggler. This would be due to the low affordable price of 99p.

2) Look at the lesson slides: how does the editor introduce Reveal magazine?

"Reveal is the reader's best friend!" This shows that Reveal is less of a magazine/source of information and more of a human figure.

3) What is the difference between the Reveal and Tatler target audiences?

Reveal's target audience are more common and active in interaction with the media. They don't have interest in hunting or perfect table manners. Tatler's target audience are higher class and aristocratic. They care more about etiquette than what celebrity is having a baby or broke off another relationship.

4) What issues are Reveal readers interested in?

Reveal readers are interested in celebrity relationships and pregnancy. They also rely on Reveal for fashion that is cheap but high end in quality. Another issue is dieting and lifestyle choices, such as going to the gym, healthy eating etc.

Media language

2) What is the font choice used on the cover and what does this choice connote?

The font choice is Sans Serif which connotes more modern and contemporary themes, the bold colours like yellow also grab the consumers attention.

3) How do the cover lines appeal to the Reveal target audience?

They refer to rocky celebrity love lives, health advice and pregnancy which many Reveal reader's thrive on; gossip one would usually hear from a friend or hairdresser.

4) What are the connotations of the Reveal colour scheme on this particular front cover?

The bright yellow text connotes attention or danger where Reveal attempts to elicit shock from their audience from the idea of Pete staying in contact with his ex. The red and pink are more feminine and passionate, referring to articles about pregnancy and Lauren's story about her new boyfriend and their 'sexual future'.

5) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression).

The images of Peter Andre and Katie Price are edited to manipulate the reader into thinking they are on the phone together whereas in reality they are two separate images that have a very small possibility of being taken at the same time nonetheless related to each other at all. The Kelly Brook image depicts her eating a cupcake which links to the article about 'Swapping cardio for carbs!' therefore giving the illusion she agrees with the idea.

6) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Reveal? List at least three and explain the effect on audiences.

Tatler's design is made to convince the reader the magazine is elitist, opulent and only accessible to the select high-class few. Sophistication is found in the Serif font which promotes antiquity and grandoise.

Stereotypes being reinforced are that reality TV starts/the celebrities shown have a lot of drama in their lives.

That they have lots of drama and secrecy in their lives yet they can also relate to their audience in the way they live their lives.

5) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Reveal?

Preffered:

Oppositional:

That celebrities are staged to look suspicious and pretty for the public and that their mundane lives aren't worth reading for entertainment.

They use language commonly found in Britain like "mum" instead of "mom" (American)
The price tag states 99 pence, meaning it's English pounds and pence.

2) What do the cover lines in Reveal suggest about the issues and lifestyle of Reveal readers?

The issues of Reveal reader's might be parenthood and how to cope with kids or weight and how to deal with it. It suggests the reader's are interested in staying healthy and going to the gym.

Ariana Grande and Mel B appear on Reveal, both females. The audience demographic is also mainly female meaning Reveal can relate to the readers better.
