'Dig toilets not graves' Analysis

DENOTATION: In this image there is a boy wearing worn clothes. His head is shaved and he looks sad. In the background there is a village and a clay/rock wall. On his left is a big message saying 'Build toilets not graves'. In the upper left corner is the logo for the company that made the ad, Water aid. This was in another country.

CONNOTATION: This boy is distraught or empty because he has probably lost a family member or someone dear to him according to the message beside him. It shows that he is not happy with the conditions of his home and that it is dangerous to live near where people use the toilet and do not have the proper sanitary care to be hygienic.

ANALYSIS: This advert uses muted, earthy colours to present the absence of happy emotions and perhaps life to represent how people are dying due to poor hygiene. The blue of his shirt could represent sadness and his expression is solemn. This would want to make people donate out of sympathy for him.
